Lake Hood is a freshwater lake located in Anchorage, Alaska. It’s notable for being the world’s busiest seaplane base, with over 200 daily operations in peak summer months. The lake is actually comprised of two connected bodies of water – Lake Hood and Lake Spenard – joined by a channel.
The lake serves as a hub for bush pilots, air taxis, and recreational flyers, providing essential transportation links to remote Alaskan communities. It features both water runways for floatplanes and gravel strips for wheeled aircraft. The Lake Hood Seaplane Base is adjacent to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, making it a key part of Alaska’s aviation infrastructure.
Visitors can watch seaplanes taking off and landing from several vantage points around the lake. The area also offers opportunities for walking, picnicking, and bird watching.
